It matters because a mattress in a showroom for five minutes tells you almost nothing. Your body needs several weeks to adjust and for you to know whether the support and comfort are right.

It depends entirely on your preference or needs.

A memory foam mattress is all foam, from top to bottom. It contours closely to your body and absorbs movement well, which is why it is popular with people who share a bed.

A hybrid has a coil support system underneath layers of foam or latex on top. You get more bounce, better airflow through the coils, and a slightly more responsive feel underfoot.

Start with two things: your sleep position and whether you sleep hot or cold.

Side sleepers need more cushioning at the shoulder and hip. Back and stomach sleepers generally need firmer support to keep the spine in line.

From there, you can narrow by material preference and budget.

For most back pain sufferers, a medium-firm mattress tends to work best. It keeps the spine properly aligned without putting too much pressure on the hips and shoulders.

Very soft mattresses let the midsection sink too far. Very firm ones do not allow enough give at the hips, which throws the spine out of alignment in the other direction.
